Jock Ramblings

The Power of a Little Thumb

It was inevitable. After a year of having A Jock’s Guide online and almost 10,000 channel hits later….I got my first thumbs down. Yup. It happened.   That annoying, manipulative little icon with the digit pointing downwards.

And instantly, it felt like I just got uninvited to my best friend’s birthday party. Who could thumb down me? Why? Do they not know I’m trying my hardest?

And then…. something wonderful happened!

I started to edit my next video…. and the sting sort of disappeared. I forgot all about it… because I was back to doing what I love, and that’s really why I do this.

Thumbs up to that!

Cooking with Kids in the Classroom

So, I’m just beyond excited right now. You see, I spent many years as an elementary school teacher and adored my job MORE than I adore cinnamon….which, if you’re just getting to know me, is a BIG deal!

I just got word that a fellow elementary school teacher in London, Ontario used a couple of my videos in her classroom (Ep.6: Gingerbread Hockey Players and Ep. 2: German Pancakes), to inspire her kids in their writing assignments.  What an amazing idea! When I was in the classroom, I was incorporating technology as much as possible, and always looking for fun and creative ways to inspire kids.  WAY TO GO TEACHERS!

What will kids learn while watching my videos?

1. Have a sense of humour. Laugh at yourself and don’t take yourself too seriously.
2. Be brave. Try new things and get it wrong!
3.  If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try, try, try again.
4. Be charitable.

Any other lessons you can think of? Let me know! And if you’re a teacher who has used one of my videos, I’d LOVE to hear all about it!

Signing off,

The Jock

PS: I’d avoid using Episode 1: How to Make Fudge – there’s wine involved. Enough said.

Why is my head cut off?

I have to say that I’ve had a few comments about my camera angles.  I know… it’s sort of annoying. Trust me, I know!  However, I wanted to explain again, that “A Jock’s Guide” is a one-woman show. Now, this is a term I do not use lightly. One-woman, being me, does the camera work, lighting, sound, hosting, editing, music accompaniment, singing (have you heard my little ditty in Episode 8?)… I’ve been struggling with camera angles since the start. My latest contraption is a large tupperware bin, with a  gigantic speaker balancing on top and my laptop balancing on the speaker… and the green grass grew all around all around and the green grass grew all around. (yeah, my 8 year old self has apparently come out to play!)

So that being said, please forgive me for my head chopping. I think I remedied it in Episode 9. :)

Sincerely,

The Jock
